The word acropolis comes from the Greek words άκρον (akron, "highest point") and πόλις (polis, "city").

The Temple of Olympian Zeus is located approximately 1640 feet south-east of the Acropolis and about 700m south of the center of Athens, Syntagma Square.It was dedicated to Zeus, the king of the Olympian gods.

During the Roman periods it was renowned as the largest temple in Greece and housed one of the largest statues in the ancient world.

The Arch of Hadrian is a monumental gateway resembling a triumphal arch.

It spanned an ancient road from the center of Athens, to the complex of structures on the eastern side of the city. The arch is located 325m southeast of the Acropolis.

The Hellenic Parliament is located in the Old Royal Palace, overlooking Syntagma Square in Athens.

The Parliament is the supreme democratic institution that represents the citizens through an elected body of Members of Parliament.

The monument called “The Monument of the Unknown Soldier” is the massive rear terrace wall of the Parliament Square on Vasilissis Amalias avenue opposite of Syntagma Square.

It represents a dying Greek heavily armed soldier.

The Academy of Athens is Greece's national academy and it was established in 1926.It operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Education.

The Academy's main building is one of the major landmarks of Athens.

University of Athens was founded on 3 May 1837 and it was the first University, not only in the newly established Greek State but also in all the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean in general.

Nowadays it is called “National and Capodistrian University of Athens”.

The National Library of Greece is located near the city center of Athens.

It is the one part of the famous Trilogy of neo-classical buildings including the Academy of Athens and the original building of the Athens University.
